Your Most Valuable Asset Isn’t Money

One of the most overlooked aspects of financial well-being is how we use our attention.

At the Oath Institute for Money & Meaning, we regularly talk with people who are retired or preparing for retirement. A consistent theme emerges: financial security brings peace of mind in some ways, but it does not automatically lead to fulfillment. What people do with their time, energy, and attention matters just as much.

It’s easier than ever to outsource our thinking. News cycles, financial media, social platforms, and even AI can quietly shape our emotions and beliefs if we’re not paying attention. Most people don’t stop thinking for themselves intentionally. It happens gradually.

A common example: you wake up feeling fine, check the news or scroll your phone, and suddenly you’re anxious or unsettled about something that has no direct impact on your day. Nothing in your personal situation changed, but your internal state did. That’s borrowed consciousness.

Independent thinking doesn’t mean ignoring information. It means noticing when you’ve adopted fear, urgency, or opinions that aren’t truly your own—and deciding whether they serve the life you want to live.

This becomes especially important in retirement, when time is abundant. The question isn’t just what you do with your time, but whether you’re actively forming your own opinions or passively absorbing someone else’s. Are your ideas evolving with new understanding, or are you fixed in place?

The important research the Oath team is doing shows that meaningful relationships, health, purpose, and peace of mind consistently rank higher than wealth alone when people define a successful retirement. Money can remove stress, but meaning comes from how you choose to live. We are finding that you are best served seeking joy with family, friends, and the work that matters to you.

In a noisy world, thinking for yourself is an ongoing daily practice. Over a lifetime, it’s one of the most valuable investments you can make. At Oath we’re here to guide you along the way.
